I came to the character of the governess by way of the original Dark Shadows TV series. Victoria Winters' first day in Collinsport, and her arrival at Collinwood, are etched into my memory. I have long fantasized about a proper resurrection of the series that gives those early stories their due. I recently read an Andre Norton story that, while sans an actual governess character, captured the language and social dynamics of my beloved show. That story was Snow Shadow. And to bring things back to the point of this video, the next Andre Norton book on my TBR actually is centered around a governess, The White Jade Fox.

This was such a great video-essay to listen to while recovering from a meltdown and a bad day ❤️‍🩹 I’ve always been into vampires, but never really looked further into the topic, so this was very insightful and interesting to me (might’ve just sparked a new hyperfixation too lol). I’ve spent the last month watching as much as I can as I’ve slowly come to the realisation that I might not be just nonbinary. But it’s very difficult to get honest experiences about private clinics in the UK. I hope this new government is kinder towards trans people, but I’m not terribly optimistic.

I read a short story in a high school Spanish class with a similar concept to Anton’s book called Nosotros No. I’m not sure if it’s really similar at all or if it has an English translation but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend checking out Voltaire & Rousseau in the West End. Second hand bookshop that has a chaotic layout but is a ton of fun to browse. Really inexpensive too!

Thanks for sharing your story. Escitalopram is better than citalopram in my experience it's a much cleaner version of the drug less side effects. I feel that antidepressants are the last hope for people and only should be used only be suggested by GP unless extremely necessary. I'm considering going back on again because I know there is something wrong with me that can't overcome and feel hopeless.

Honestly for every video of yours I watch I'm always astounded by the passion and cleverness with which you're able to talk about these books - while maintaining SUCH a schedule. Even when a book is not my jam (or in fact yours) you always hit on something that makes it sound worth talking about. Going from 4 vids to 3 sounds like the best thing you can do! I'm pretty tightly budgeted at the moment but your patreon is one of the top things on my list when I get a bit of flexibility, and this stuff sounds super cool! I've been here a while and I am on the Patreon, all this sounds great. Recently you've really started showing a lot more of your snarky/sassy side in your vids (we gotta watch out when that hat comes out) and that's something most of us on the Patreon see a lot more of in your day to day posting. Your channel has always been about books, and that's your focus, but I think you kind of underrate your self as an entertainer. Anytime you start 'misbehaving', the fun factor of your vids really goes up. I think that might be a way to grow your channel more. Literate perspectives on current fiction is definitely a specific niche that you are good at. Snarky hat person making fun of literary stuff covers that niche, and a lot of other book-related niches. Keep doing that.

I'm really looking forward to the essays and will be reading chapter 1 when i finish work in about 15 minutes

Years ago I shifted my career out of my speciality and turned my passion into a full time job. I've never regreted that choice, but turning a passion into a career means forming a deeper relationship with something you love. It sounds great until it devours you whole. 4 years into it and 2 years of consistant therapy later and I'm now at a place similar to where you seem to be at now: creating but not burning myself out, taking consistant breaks and keeping to a schedule as to continue doing this to the end of my working days. Turning a passion into a career can sound perfect but it is like marrying your lover: the relationship inherently changes and communication is necessary to keep going strong. The difference is that this relationship with within yourself and being honest with your long-term direction to yourself can be very challenging. So thank you for sharing your insights and thoughts in this video. For what is a general update, I found it inspiring to maintain a healthy work relationship and keep maintaining my career. I wish you the best and look forward to more of your creative work.
